The twenty year conflict in Vietnam was the longest military involvement in American history. The Geneva conference left Vietnam divided at the17th parallel and full of uncertainty for a ruling power. United States forces joined initially with southern Vietnamese Ngo Dinh Diem against communist movements of the North. As the fear of communism grew, the war became a highly controversial issue of American troop safety.
