What began as a small Social Studies Seminar project quickly evolved into an oral history project of great proportions. The Lonaconing Silk Mill, built in 1907 and operated until 1957, is a great piece of local history that the Social Studies Seminar class of 1999 turned into a successful publication which began the series of books that the students of Allegany High School have published annually ever since. The Lonaconing Silk Mill 1907-1957 was written and published to preserve the memories and experiences of the people who lived and worked in the mill. This was the first of many books to be produced by the Allegany High School Social Studies Department. It contains the history of the Lonaconing Silk Mill of Allegany County with information obtained through the oral history of the people who lived through it. Twelve former employees of the Silk Mill were interviewed and their stories are revealed in this publication of The Lonaconing Silk Mill.
