World War II affected the lives of virtually all Allegany County residents. While local men served in combat roles, other residents supported the war effort at home. Work & Wait: Allegany County the Home Front Years focuses on personal experiences of the residents of Allegany County during World War II. The home front book was published in 2003. The Social Studies Seminar class interviewed residents of Allegany County to record their experiences during World War II. The goal of this project was to document and set in stone the personal experiences of the people back home: the loved ones that were left behind while their husbands and sons were sent off to fight for our country. This was the fifth book to be produced by the Allegany High School Social Studies Department. Most of the information was obtained through oral documentation transcribed by the students in the Social studies seminar class. Over sixty-one individuals were interviewed so that their stories could be documented in Work and Wait: Allegany County The Home Front Years a story of World War II starting in 1941 and ending in 1945.
